The 817th Evacuation Hospital was a field medical facility of the United States Army during World War II. It played a crucial role in providing medical care to wounded soldiers during combat operations and evacuating them to higher-level hospitals for additional treatment. The hospital unit was mobilized in September 1942, stationed at Camp Lee, Virginia, before being deployed overseas. The 817th served in several theaters, including North Africa (Operation Torch), Sicily, Normandy, and the Rhineland, treating over 30,000 patients until its deactivation in November 1945. Throughout its service, the unit's dedication to the wellbeing of wounded soldiers earned it numerous commendations and awards.
