Battle of Chickasaw Bayou, Miss. (The Poison Spring, February, 1864) The Battle of Chickasaw Bayou was a military engagement during the U.S. Civil War that took place in Mississippi from January 29 to February 3, 1864. Union forces led by Maj. Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman attempted to capture the Confederate stronghold of Vicksburg, located on high ground overlooking the Chickasaw Bayou. Despite a successful crossing of the bayou, Union troops were unable to take advantage of their initial success due to difficult terrain and heavy rains, ultimately failing in their attempt to capture Vicksburg. The battle is also known as the Battle of the Poison Spring due to the presence of contaminated water sources near the Confederate positions, which may have contributed to Union casualties. This engagement was a significant event during the Vicksburg Campaign and underscored the challenges faced by both sides in their efforts to control key strategic locations during the U.S. Civil War.
