Benedict (U.S. Civil War) "Benedict" refers to a strategic railroad junction and Confederate earthwork fortification located on the eastern shore of Maryland during the American Civil War. The site was instrumental in the Battle of Fort St. John's, fought between Union forces under Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside and Confederate forces led by Gen. John G. Martin from May 8-10, 1864. Despite initial successes, the Confederates were eventually forced to retreat, abandoning Benedict and Fort St. John's to Union control. The battle marked one of the last significant Confederate offensives in the Maryland campaign. Today, the area is preserved as part of the Port Discovery State Park and provides a valuable historical insight into this pivotal period of U.S. history.
