It marked the return to space for the Mir space station following the explosion of its previous crew aboard Soyuz TM-20 in June 1994. The mission carried Russian cosmonaut Vasili Tsibliyev and American astronaut Kathryn D. Sullivan, who became the first American woman to visit the Mir space station. During their 165-day stay on Mir, they conducted scientific research in the fields of biology, earth sciences, materials science, and medicine.
