Description/Blazon

A shield blazoned: Or, a bordure Vert, on a chevron Azure, 16 mullets pierced of the field; on a canton embattled (for the 6th Cavalry) Vert (for the 3rd Cavalry), a staff erect attached to a standard flotant Or, charged with a horseshoe, heels upward, encircling the Arabic numeral "14" Sable (for the 14th Cavalry). Below the shield is a gold scroll inscribed "STRIKE HARD" in black letters.

Symbolism

The regiment, constituted in 1916, was formed with personnel from the 3rd, 6th, and 14th Cavalry, represented by the canton. Green symbolizes the facings of the Mounted Rifles, now the 3rd Cavalry; the embattled line recalls the 6th Cavalry's first engagement at Williamsburg in 1862, where they assaulted artillery in earthworks. The shield’s yellow (Or) represents Cavalry, while the blue chevron symbolizes the old blue uniform. The 16 mullets (spur rowels) signify both the numerical designation and mounted service. The green border and rattlesnake crest symbolize the regiment’s origins and service on the Mexican Border. The motto, "Strike Hard," directly references the crest.

Background

The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 16th Cavalry on October 28, 1958. It was amended to correct the symbolism on June 23, 1960, and later redesignated for the 16th Armor on August 22, 1968. It was redesignated again for the 16th Cavalry on May 12, 1970, with the description and symbolism updated on April 3, 2012.
