Description

A shield blazoned: Per fess Argent and Azure, in chief a palm tree on a mount Proper, and in base a giant cactus and fleur-de-lis Or, all within a gold bordure. Attached below the shield is a blue scroll, doubled and inscribed with "STRIKE HARD AND FAST" in gold letters.

Symbolism

The central elements of the shield mirror the coat of arms and distinctive unit insignia of the 163rd Infantry, with the gold border symbolizing lineage from that unit. The palm tree represents service in the Philippines, the giant cactus denotes duty on the Mexican Border, and the fleur-de-lis signifies service in France during World War I. The blue and white colors are traditionally associated with Infantry, reflecting the unit's combat service as the 163rd Infantry during World War II.

Background

The distinctive unit insignia was approved on February 1, 1989.
