Description/Blazon

A shield blazoned: Azure, a red saltire Gules fimbriated Argent intertwined with an inverted chevron Argent (Gray), with a dogwood blossom Argent, seeded Or fimbriated Sable, in chief. Attached below is a red scroll doubled in silver, inscribed with "DEATH TO TYRANTS" in silver letters.

Symbolism

The blue and white colors represent the unit's origins in the 183rd Infantry. The red and white St. Andrew’s Cross recalls service in the War of 1812, while the gray chevron on the blue background symbolizes service with the 29th Infantry Division. The chevron, reflecting early military insignia, signifies the traditional role of the citizen-soldier in maintaining readiness to protect the nation. The dogwood, Virginia's state flower, symbolizes the unit’s home station.

Background

The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 183rd Infantry Regiment on October 10, 1986. It was redesignated for the 183rd Regiment on May 5, 1997, and later for the 183rd Cavalry Regiment on June 1, 2006. The symbolism was amended on July 14, 2023.
