Description/Blazon

A shield blazoned: Azure, an eagle's wing displayed with an armored sword hand Argent grasping a short sword Or point to dexter base severing a bendlet of chains debased of the second, and charged on the pinion with three torteaux, two and one. Attached below the shield is a silver scroll inscribed "WINGED ATTACK" in blue letters.

Symbolism

The principal colors of the shield reflect Infantry. The eagle's wing symbolizes the airborne forces' vertical attack and striking power. The golden sword severing the chain represents the unit’s role in liberating 2,000 prisoners of war from the Los Banos prison camp in Luzon, Philippine Islands. The three red roundels (torteaux) on the wing denote the unit’s campaigns in New Guinea, Luzon, and Leyte.

Background

The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 188th Airborne Infantry Regiment on 28 September 1951. It was redesignated for the 188th Infantry Regiment on 11 September 1963.
