The giant cactus signifies service in the Mexican War; the five-bastioned fort denotes service in the Spanish-American War, as it was the badge of the V Corps in Cuba. The arrows and quiver represent the Indian campaigns, and the bolo symbolizes service during the Philippine Insurrection.
