Description/Blazon:

A black central disc surrounded by three concentric circles, alternating red and black. Five gold (heraldic) javelin heads issue from the outer rim and terminate on the central disc, all enclosed within a continuous gold scroll that is triple-folded and oversized at the top. The scroll bears a red passant guardant lion and is inscribed at the bottom in black letters: "STEEL ON TARGET."

Symbolism:

The lion, inspired by the arms of Normandy, represents the unit's battle honors in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe during World War II. The javelin heads on target symbolize the unit's motto and commemorate the firing of 175mm self-propelled guns on November 19, 1965, in Vietnam—marking the first time these guns were used in combat. The red (scarlet) background signifies the Meritorious Unit Commendation (Vietnam) Award. The arrangement of the javelin heads—two at the top and three at the base—further represents the unit's numerical designation.

Background:

The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 23d Artillery Group on November 29, 1968, and redesignated for the 23d Air Defense Artillery Group effective June 4, 1973.
