Description/Blazon
A gray rectangular shield with arched top and bottom, enclosed within a gray border. The shield features a blue saltire, overlaid with a fleur-de-lis, where the central frond is red and the outer fronds and cross-bar are gold.
Symbolism
The saltire, a symbol representing a brigade on military maps, signifies the Organization. It also references the Brigade's home area, with early settlers from Nova Scotia, as the saltire appears on Nova Scotia's coat of arms. The fleur-de-lis symbolizes the Brigade's headquarters location in Lafayette, reflecting the French heritage of the region. The red center frond represents Lafayette's original name, Vermilionville, and the nearby Bayou Vermilion. The combination of blue (for Infantry), silver (symbolizing sincerity), along with red and gold, also ties to the branch colors of Artillery and other components of the Brigade. The rectangular shield shape is traditionally used for shoulder sleeve insignia of brigades.
Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was initially approved for the 256th Infantry Brigade on 23 July 1968. It was redesignated for the 256th Infantry Brigade Combat Team and amended to update the description on 3 August 2007. The symbolism was further updated on 22 June 2023.
