Description/Blazon

A five-pointed white star features an Indian head in profile, adorned with a war bonnet. The face is red, and the bonnet is blue, with the feather outlines also in blue. This star is superimposed on a black shield.

Symbolism

The star has been a significant symbol throughout American history, representing the nation's heritage from the Colonial era to the present. The Indian head represents the original American inhabitants. These elements were initially adopted by the division for vehicle markings to identify them as "All American."

Background

The shoulder sleeve insignia was first authorized for the 2nd Division on 6 November 1918 and officially announced by The Adjutant General on 21 June 1922. The description was corrected on 7 November 1927. The insignia was redesignated for the 2nd Infantry Division effective 1 August 1942, with amendments to its dimensions.
