Blazon
On a blue square, a yellow sun in splendor with a disc and 12 rays within a circle. The square is oriented point up.
Symbolism
The design represents California, where the division originated. The blue field symbolizes the sky and the Pacific Ocean.
Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was initially approved for the 40th Division via telegram on 23 November 1918 and officially announced on 27 May 1922. It was amended to include the method of wear on 17 March 1931 and redesignated for the 40th Armored Division on 27 July 1954. The insignia was reinstated and redesignated for the 40th Infantry Brigade on 1 May 1968, and later for the 40th Infantry Division on 21 January 1974. An amendment to add the symbolism was made on 19 January 1999. The OCP shoulder sleeve insignia pattern was modified on 15 February 2024 by exception to policy.
