Background

The shoulder sleeve insignia was initially approved by telegram for the 42nd Division on 29 October 1918 and officially authorized for wear by the War Department on 27 May 1922. It was redesignated for the 42nd Infantry Division on 8 September 1947 and amended to include the Army green border on 24 March 1966.
