The 42nd Infantry Regiment, also known as the Rainbow Division, is a unit of the United States Army. Established in 1917 during World War I, it was initially formed by combining National Guard units from several different states to create a multi-state division. Throughout its history, the 42nd Infantry Regiment has participated in significant military actions, including World War I, World War II (where it was one of the first divisions to land on Omaha Beach during the D-Day invasion), the Korean War, and more recently, the Global War on Terrorism.
