Description/Blazon
On a light khaki square, with one angle up, four green ivy leaves are arranged in a cross pattern, emanating from a small central circle. Each leaf is positioned in one of the square's angles and along the vertical and horizontal axes. All are enclosed within a light khaki border.
Symbolism
The four ivy leaves represent the Division's numerical designation, while the arrangement evokes the Roman numeral "IV" through the pronunciation "I-VY." Ivy leaves symbolize fidelity and tenacity.
Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally approved for the 4th Division on 30 October 1918, featuring an olive background in the design. It was redesignated for the 4th Infantry Division effective 4 August 1943. On 2 July 1958, the background color was changed to light khaki. The insignia was amended to include the symbolism on 1 April 1969.
