Description/Blazon
A shield blazoned: Argent, on a pale wavy Azure, a dolphin hauriant embowed of the field, with a canton of the second bearing the totem pole of the 23d Infantry Tenné. Below the shield, a silver scroll inscribed "PLAY THE GAME" in blue letters.
Symbolism
The Regiment, organized in 1917 at Syracuse, New York, was formed from personnel drafted from the 23d Infantry. The shield’s white and blue colors represent Infantry. The dolphin, a symbol of Syracuse, is featured prominently. The canton reflects the Regiment’s lineage, referencing the 23d Infantry's historical presence in Alaska. The canton’s totem pole is derived from the crest of the 23d Infantry, symbolizing the transfer of Alaska from Russia to America. The pale wavy edges commemorate the Regiment's World War I service as part of the Army of Occupation in the Rhine region, with preparations for Silesia at the time of the Armistice.
Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 50th Armored Infantry Regiment on 14 October 1942. It was redesignated for the 50th Armored Infantry Battalion on 10 November 1943, and later redesignated for the 50th Infantry Regiment on 25 November 1958.
