Description:

A shield blazoned: Per saltire or and gules, a caterpillar bendwise passant vert. Attached below the shield is a gold scroll inscribed with "FIRE FOR EFFECT" in red letters.

Symbolism:

The red and yellow colors represent Artillery. The shield design is derived from the insignia of the former 51st Field Artillery Battalion, while the caterpillar element comes from the insignia of the 51st Coast Artillery Battalion. This combination reflects the heritage of both units within the consolidated organization. The caterpillar symbolizes the use of tractors.

Background:

The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 51st Field Artillery Battalion on December 26, 1951. It was redesignated for the 51st Artillery Regiment on January 12, 1959. The insignia was later redesignated for the 51st Air Defense Artillery Regiment effective September 1, 1971, and redesigned for the 51st Air Defense Artillery on April 26, 2022.
