Description/Blazon:
A shield blazoned: Per fess dancette Argent and Sable, a thunderbolt bendwise Proper penetrating the chariot wheel of Helios, winged with two dexter wings inverted forming a saltire, with the wheel and the sun in splendor of the third.
Symbolism:
The device depicts the Greek mythological story of Helios's winged chariot. According to the myth, Helios, the sun, drove his chariot across the heavens daily, drawn by celestial horses. His son, Phaeton, took over the chariot for a day to prove his divine lineage but lost control, causing widespread destruction. Zeus intervened by striking the chariot with a lightning bolt, marking the first recorded instance of an aerial target being hit. The sawtooth line on the shield, derived from Lord Delaware's arms, represents the Coast Defense of the Chesapeake. The upper part of the shield is white for day, and the lower part is black for night.
Background:
The distinctive unit insignia was initially approved for the 61st Artillery Battalion on November 16, 1923. It was redesignated for the 61st Coast Artillery Regiment on December 12, 1939. The insignia was further redesignated for the 61st Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion on August 10, 1955, and for the 61st Artillery Regiment on December 19, 1958. It was redesignated for the 61st Air Defense Artillery Regiment effective September 1, 1971.
