Description/Blazon
A shield blazoned: Sable, a Maltese cross Argent. Below and to the sides of the shield is a gold scroll inscribed with "HONOR ET FIDELITAS" in black letters.
Symbolism
Originally the Puerto Rico Regiment, renamed the 65th Infantry in 1920, the insignia reflects the historical connection to Puerto Rico. The island was named "San Juan" by Columbus, after the military order of St. John of Jerusalem, now known as the Knights of Malta. The black shield with the white Maltese cross symbolizes this heritage. The motto, "Honor et Fidelitas," translates to "Honor and Fidelity."
Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved for the 65th Infantry Regiment on 27 November 1923. It was amended on 13 June 1968 to reflect the assignment to the Puerto Rico Army National Guard and to include the motto.
