This shot glass shows the national flag of Greece, nine crisp stripes of blue and white with a white cross set in a blue square.

Visual Elements & Composition

The stripes run the full length of the flag, alternating blue and white in even bands, so the pattern has a steady rhythm from top to bottom. White covers slightly more of the surface than blue and gives the design its bright, high-contrast look. In the upper corner nearest the hoist, a blue square carries a white cross, and that square is the only break in the stripes. Dark grey appears only as a small accent. Meaning & Symbolism

The nine stripes are traditionally said to stand for the nine syllables of the Greek phrase Eleftheria i Thanatos, meaning "Freedom or Death", a rallying cry of the independence struggle. The white cross in the blue corner stands for Eastern Orthodox Christianity, the faith of the great majority of Greeks. The blue and white colours recur throughout Greek national life, and the current flag was officially adopted on 4 August 1978, although its elements have been in use since the nineteenth century.
