Description/Blazon
On a black inverted pyramid, featuring the yellow cipher "O H I O." The monogram consists of two circles: an outer circle, and an inner circle,, with one horizontal and three vertical lines.
Symbolism
The monogrammed insignia represents Ohio, the state from which the majority of the division's members were drawn when it was activated during World War I.
Background
The insignia was originally approved for the 83rd Division by telegram from the Adjutant General, American Expeditionary Forces, on 26 December 1918. It was authorized by the War Department for the 83rd Division on 22 June 1922 and redesignated for the 83rd Infantry Division on 2 February 1966. The insignia was worn by the 83rd Army Reserve Command from 22 April 1968 until the ARCOM was discontinued on 15 September 1996.
