Description/Blazon

A shield with a blue background and a silver cross arranged in a saltire (diagonal) pattern. Below and to the sides of the shield is a silver scroll inscribed with "RIDE THE STORM" in blue letters.

Symbolism

The blue shield represents the Infantry, and the cross forms the effect of two crossed "8's," symbolizing the unit's designation through canting heraldry. The cross also resembles a propeller, indicating the unit's connection to aviation.

Background

The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 88th Infantry Airborne Battalion on 17 December 1941. It was redesignated for the 88th Infantry Regiment on 29 September 1942 and rescinded on 10 February 1959.
