Symbolism
The five-bastioned fort represents the badge of the Fifth Army Corps in Cuba, with which the Ninth Cavalry was associated. The yellow outline signifies the Cavalry, while the blue denotes active service during the Spanish-American War. The mounted Indian symbolizes the Regiment’s participation in Indian campaigns.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 9th Cavalry Regiment on October 22, 1925. It was redesignated for the 509th Tank Battalion on May 23, 1951, and amended to update the symbolism on July 31, 1951. The insignia was redesignated for the 9th Cavalry Regiment on October 1, 1958.
