Born on February 11, 1812, in Taliaferro County, Georgia, and educated at Franklin College, Stephens was a prominent statesman from Georgia before the Civil War. He is best known for delivering the "Cornerstone Speech," where he expounded upon the Confederate vision of preserving the institution of slavery as the "cornerstone" of their new nation.
