This is a cavalry charge frozen mid-pursuit, with Russian dragoons riding hard after Ottoman forces on the road to Kars.

Visual Elements & Composition

Alexei Danilovich Kivshenko built the scene around movement. Horsemen press forward along the road, and the eye follows their momentum across the picture. The palette is restrained: earth tones, military green and dusty ochre, with the dust and haze of the road doing much of the work. Nothing is decorative. The realism rests on the careful placement of riders and horses, which makes the scene read as an observed event rather than a staged tableau.

Meaning & Symbolism

Kivshenko painted the work in 1892, drawing on the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878. It records the Battle of Aladzhinskogo on October 3, 1877, when the Nizhny Novgorod Dragoons pursued Ottoman troops toward Kars. Kivshenko was a member of the Peredvizhniki, the Wanderers, a group of Russian painters who rejected academic idealism in favour of contemporary life and historical truth. The painting is therefore both a memorial to a cavalry engagement and a document of how late nineteenth-century battles looked and felt.
