Alfred Stevens and Henri Gervex created the full panorama, Histoire du siècle, for the 1889 Universal Exhibition in Paris. It was a visual chronicle of French progress in politics, science and the arts, running from the French Revolution to the late nineteenth century. The complete work featured 641 figures, each a small stake in the nation's march forward. Painted in the Academic style, it was meant to be read as a national story, with history treated as something grand, orderly and collective.
