Fought on September 17, 1862, the Battle of Antietam remains the bloodiest single day in United States military history, with approximately 23,000 casualties. The bridge stands for that narrow, exposed approach and for the hours of fighting needed to secure passage. Its name honours Union General Ambrose E. Burnside, although he did not personally lead the assault there. Taking the crossing helped force General Robert E. Lee to retreat into Virginia, which gave President Abraham Lincoln the political opening to issue the Emancipation Proclamation and redefine the war around ending slavery.
