Arlington House is a historic estate located in Arlington County, Virginia, overlooking the Potomac River. Originally built between 1802 and 1818 by George Washington's son-in-law, General Robert E. Lee, served as the residence of Lee and his family until 1861 when he became a Confederate general during the American Civil War. The house was confiscated by the U.S. Government in 1864 for nonpayment of taxes and later became part of the expanding U.S. Army Arsenal, which eventually developed into Arlington National Cemetery. Today, the restored mansion serves as a museum run by the National Park Service, offering visitors insights into the life of Robert E. Lee and the history of the estate. The property remains an important symbol of the Civil War era and its impact on American society.
