A crowned red lion stands upright on a shield of alternating blue and white stripes, a design that has held its shape for centuries.

Visual Elements & Composition

The shield is a plain heater form divided into ten horizontal bands of equal weight, five blue and five white. Blue, white and red each take about three-tenths of the design, so the three colours balance evenly. The red lion rampant stands in the centre, rising on its hind legs across the stripes, and its gold crown, claws and tongue are the only metallic accents. Nothing is layered over the field, so the stripes and the lion carry the whole composition.

Meaning & Symbolism

The lion stands for courage and sovereignty, and its crown marks the rule of the counts of Luxembourg. Set on the striped field, the lion became the distinctive symbol of the family that ruled the territory across the medieval period. The arms later changed as Luxembourg merged or allied with neighbouring lands, and the modern Grand Ducal arms add further elements.
