Artillery Depot (Camp Barry) Near Washington, D.C. (U.S. Civil War) Description: Artillery Depot, also known as Camp Barry, was a Union Army training and assembly center during the American Civil War. Located in Silver Spring, Maryland, just north of Washington, D.C., it served as a significant strategic point from 1861 to 1865. The camp was named after Brigadier General John Goffe Barry, an artillery officer who was later killed at the Battle of Antietam. Camp Barry played a crucial role in the Union's defense of Washington and provided training grounds for thousands of artillerymen. Notable events that occurred within its vicinity include the First Battle of Bull Run (Manassas) and the early part of the Maryland Campaign.
