Named positions such as Fort Walker, Fort Hood and Fort McPherson, along with countless unnamed earthworks, were made from packed earth, logs and timber rather than stone, and they stood as a measure of the desperate engineering behind the defence. Official Union photographer George N. Barnard documented similar sites that year, which is why this image carries the weight of a genuine record of one of the Civil War's most decisive campaigns.
