Meaning & Symbolism

Atlanta was a major Confederate rail and supply hub, and its defenders built an arc of fortifications to protect it. The stakes and earthworks show how that defence was laid out to slow an advancing army across open ground. The campaign of 1864 ended with the Confederates abandoning the city in September, which makes this barrier a record of defences that did not hold. The title credits photographer George N. Barnard and his darkroom, placing the making of the picture among the documentary work of the war.
