This black-and-white photograph documents the earthworks that ringed Atlanta during the U.S. Civil War, with photographer George N. Barnard and his darkroom placed in the frame as witnesses to the scene.

Visual Elements & Composition

Pale sky and light grey ground fill most of the picture, broken by mid and dark grey tones and a band of dark earth. A long line of wooden abatis stakes runs diagonally across open ground, and the stakes give the image its strongest rhythm. Behind them rises an earthwork mound, with white conical tents on a distant rise and a lone tree on a slope. At left, a horse-drawn wagon sits beside a small group of men in military-style dress. Meaning & Symbolism

Atlanta was a vital Confederate transportation and supply hub, so its railroads, depots and industrial sites became a primary target for Union forces. The fortifications were built in a rough arc across hills and ridges to make the most of the terrain against advancing armies under William Tecumseh Sherman. The photograph records those defences during the 1864 Atlanta Campaign, before the Confederates abandoned the city in September 1864. The stakes, mounds and tents show military engineering, and Barnard's presence shows the camera recording the war as it happened.
