Visual Elements & Composition

Blue and white make up nearly all of the design, with small touches of yellow and green. A vertical bicolour of blue and white forms the ground, and a shield sits at the centre as the dominant image. Inside the shield, two ducks rest on a lake, with mountains, a seven-rayed sun and the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Branches of cotton and maize flank the shield on either side, and a gold mural crown tops it. The flat vector rendering keeps each figure clear, and the lettering PATOS - PB and the date 1903 appear as visible text.

Meaning & Symbolism

The blue and white represent the Virgin Mary, the patroness of the municipality. The two ducks give the town its name, the seven rays of the sun stand for the seven days of the week, and the church stands for the faith of the community. The cotton and maize branches mark the region's chief agricultural products, and the mountain range of the Serra do Pedro sets the local landscape. The emblem was designed by the painter Anésio Barbosa de Araújo, known as Flanésio, after a public competition, and was approved by decree 021/78 on 24 October 1978.
