A nested black outline encloses the route number BR-457 on a white shield, a flat marker for a Brazilian federal highway junction.
Visual Elements & Composition
White fills the field and black supplies every mark on it. The shield has a rounded top and a notched point at the base, and a nested outline repeats that silhouette inside the outer edge. “BR” leads, followed by the three numerals 4, 5 and 7 in heavy black type. The “jct” notation completes the sign. The composition is symmetrical and uncluttered, relying on contrast and the strong shape of the shield.
Meaning & Symbolism
“BR” is the code for a federal highway in Brazil, and the national transport authority oversees these roads. They link states with one another, with major economic centres, with ports and with borders. The number 457 names this route, and “jct” tells drivers that an intersection or access point lies along it. The shield is the modern standard for these markers, and the design records the country’s system of numbered routes.
Held in One Hand
A mug is held by the handle and turned with the wrist, so the shield is seen in arcs rather than as a flat sheet. The nested border keeps the outline readable around the curve of the cup, and the three numerals stay clear as it rotates. It is a fitting surface for a sign whose whole purpose is to be read quickly by someone on the move.
