The BR-512 route shield, rendered in black on white, marks a junction on Brazil’s federal highway system.
Visual Elements & Composition
White makes up most of the design, with black taking about one-seventh of the field. A shield with a notched point at the bottom holds the designation at the centre, and a double-ruled border follows its contour. The letters “BR” sit above the numerals “512”, both in solid black. The artwork is entirely flat, with no shading or texture, and the single shape carries the whole composition.
Meaning & Symbolism
The “BR” code identifies a federal highway, and the federal government manages these routes through the national transport department, DNIT. Routes of this kind link states, economic regions, ports and capitals. The number 512 names this particular road, and the “jct” tag marks an intersection or access point along it. The shield itself is the standard modern format for Brazilian route markers.
Turned in the Hand
A mug is handled from every side, so a route marker on it is seen in pieces: the shield edge as the cup is lifted, the numerals as it is turned to drink. The double border keeps the outline legible across the curve of the ceramic, and the black figures stay clear from the handle side. It suits a cup that gets picked up and set down all day.
