This design reduces a highway marker to its bare essentials: the route designation BR-855, set in black lettering on a white field.
Visual Elements & Composition
Black and white are the only colours, with white covering roughly four-fifths of the design. The central motif is a vertical shield with a curved base and a notch cut into its lower edge, outlined by a double border that gives it the look of a sign seen up close. Inside the shield, the letters BR sit above the numerals 855, with the abbreviation "jct" completing the reading. Nothing decorative competes with the lettering, so the eye goes straight to the route number. The flat vector style keeps every edge crisp.
Meaning & Symbolism
Brazil's federal highways use the BR prefix, and the shield form signals a numbered route on the national network. The design captures that visual language of wayfinding, where a short code is enough to tell a driver which road they are on and where it meets another. Its modern, utilitarian character places it firmly in the present day, as a reminder of how much of the world is organised by numbers on signs.
Life on the Mug
A mug is turned in the hand and read from the side, so the shield comes into view one section at a time as you rotate it. The white surface lets the black route marker stand out cleanly, and the composition sits comfortably within the handle-free side of the cup. It suits a morning coffee at a desk for anyone who has spent time on long drives or simply enjoys the graphic logic of road signs.
