This is a 1914 map of Mexico and Central America, drawn as a single view of the region from the Mexican highlands down to the narrow neck of land that joins the two continents.

Visual Elements & Composition

The coastlines do most of the work. The Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean curve along the eastern edge, the Pacific runs down the western side, and the land between them tapers to a point. Borders are drawn as fine, deliberate lines, and place names sit in small serif type, spaced to follow the shape of the land. Nothing in the composition is decorative for its own sake.
