Cesare Maccari's fresco shows the blind Roman censor Appius Claudius Caecus being led through the Curia by a group of senators, at the moment the Senate turns to hear him.

Visual Elements & Composition

The scene is arranged with care. Figures are grouped around the old censor, who is set at the centre of the procession, and the formal architecture of the Curia closes in behind them. The palette is muted and classical, with warm stone tones and restrained shadows that give the whole composition a sense of depth and quiet weight. Nothing shouts. The eye moves slowly from one figure to the next, which suits the mood of the piece: dignified, serious and academic.

Meaning & Symbolism

Appius Claudius Caecus was one of the great figures of early Rome. As censor he built the Via Appia and the Aqua Appia, and he is remembered for rising in the Senate, despite his blindness, to argue against peace with Pyrrhus. Maccari painted the fresco between 1882 and 1888 for the Senate of the newly unified Italian state, when history painting was a way of tying modern government to ancient Rome. The image is less a portrait than a statement about civic duty, age and the authority of a single voice in public life.
