Charleston, S.C. View Of Meeting Street, Looking South Toward The Circular Church, The Mills House, And St. Michael's Church (U.S. Civil War) Pint Glass 16oz

A monochrome documentary photograph taken in April 1865, looking south down Meeting Street in Charleston, South Carolina, past war-damaged brick buildings toward the steeple of St. Michael's Church.

Visual Elements & Composition

The image is built from mid greys and pale greys, with near-black accents and bright white highlights. The cobbled street runs straight down the centre of the frame, lined by wrought iron fences and iron street lamp posts. Ruined brick buildings lie in rubble on either side, and a scaffolded brick tower rises among them. The church steeple stands far off at the end of the street, so the eye travels from the wreckage at close range to the spire on the horizon. The number 3072 appears within the picture.

Meaning & Symbolism

The view was made in the spring of 1865, as the American Civil War came to its close, and it shows Charleston after the long bombardment and fire that damaged much of the city. The Circular Church, the Mills House and St. Michael's Church appear in the photograph as landmarks of a city that had been the birthplace of secession. The image is preserved in the Robert N. Dennis collection of stereoscopic views, and it stands for the damage of war and the task of rebuilding that followed.

Placing the Street on the Mixing Glass

A mixing glass is a tall, straight-sided vessel that is picked up and held close, so this street scene is seen at arm's length rather than across a city block. The clear glass lets the drink show, and the grey tones of the photograph appear behind it as the glass is filled. Each time it is lifted, the ruined brick and the steeple of St. Michael's return to view, a sober reminder of what the war left standing.

Clear 16 oz (≈0.47 L) pint glasses made from solid glass with a heavy base for steady placement. Narrower at the bottom for an easier grip and balanced feel — durable, dishwasher-safe, and ideal for both serving and mixing.

These pints are crafted from 100% clear glass that showcases the drink inside — color, clarity and carbonation are all visible. A heavier, solid base reduces tipping and gives the glass a satisfying weight in the hand while the gently tapered body makes holding and carrying more comfortable.

Built to last, the construction resists chipping under normal use and is suitable for busy service environments as well as retail display. One-sided print work reads bright against the clear surface; the overall aesthetic is clean and modern.

  • Material: 100% clear glass for pure clarity and gloss.
  • Capacity: 16 oz (standard U.S. pint / ≈0.47 L).
  • Base: heavy solid glass base reduces tipping and improves balance.
  • Shape: narrower bottom for a comfortable grip and easier carrying.
  • Durability: dishwasher-safe and built for regular use.

Use these glasses for draft pours, mixed drinks, iced beverages and more. Their clear walls show off color and bubbles, which makes them a great choice for menus, tasting flights, and bars where presentation matters.

  1. Serving: ideal for beers, sodas, iced teas and cocktails served cold.
  2. Mixing: also works as a simple mixing glass for shaken or stirred cocktails in casual settings.
  3. Display: clean silhouette fits behind bars, on shelves, or on retail racks.

Quick tip: because the base is heavier, these glasses feel stable on trays and counters — handy when serving multiple drinks at once.

These glasses are dishwasher-safe; place them on the top rack and use a regular household cycle. For best longevity, avoid stacking them tightly and steer clear of high-heat commercial wash cycles when possible.

Hand wash with warm water and mild dish soap when you want to preserve maximum clarity and avoid sudden temperature shocks. Handle by the body, not just the rim, to reduce the chance of accidental chipping.
