Visual Elements & Composition

Meaning & Symbolism

The image shows engineering carried out in the field rather than in a drawing office. In late May 1862, the 5th New Hampshire Infantry, under Colonel Edward E. Cross, built a grapevine bridge across the Chickahominy River in Virginia on the 27th and 28th. The artwork preserves that effort as a tribute to Cross and his regiment, and to the soldiers who turned timber and hand tools into a passage for the army. Every log in the causeway stands for the men who cut, carried and laid it.
