This design is a printed map of China and East Asia, drawn as it stood in 1945, with its borders, coastlines and place names set out in the plain, precise style of a mid-century atlas.

Visual Elements & Composition

Pale yellow covers the largest share of the artwork, with pale blue for the seas and cream and tan for the land around them. Small touches of rose pick out the borders. The map sits inside a rectangular frame, and its irregular national borders run across the composition like the edges of a jigsaw. The labels are set in clean type: CHINA runs across the centre, while Outer Mongolia, Chosen, French Indochina and the Philippines mark the edges of the land.
