Chronicon Nurembergense Map (1493) - Color Morphing Mug Design

This is a circular world map from the 1493 Nuremberg Chronicle, a woodcut picture of the known world drawn when Europe was only beginning to chart the Atlantic in earnest.

Visual Elements & Composition

The map is built on the old T-O model: a ring of ocean encloses the land, and a crossbar of water divides the continents into three parts. Asia fills the upper half, while Europe and Africa sit below it in the lower corners. The coastlines are drawn in fine, dense linework, and place names are lettered in small Gothic type scattered across the landmasses. Everything is held inside a single circle, so the eye travels around the rim rather than across a flat grid.

Meaning & Symbolism

Hartmann Schedel's chronicle set out biblical and world history from Creation onward, and its maps reflected how scholars of the period understood the globe: a finite world of three continents, with Jerusalem placed near the centre as the spiritual heart of creation. The map belongs to a moment when printing had made such images widely available, so a single woodcut could carry a whole cosmology into a merchant's or scholar's home.
