Visual Elements & Composition

A shield sits at the centre of the design, ringed by a laurel wreath and a circular seal. Red takes the largest share of the palette, with sky blue, green, gold and grey filling the rest. A rising sun with a face looks out over mountains, and four arrows cross the lower field. The lettering reads GUATEMALA, EN CENTRO AMERICA and 15 DE SEPT DE 1821, so the date of independence is written into the emblem itself.

Meaning & Symbolism

The parchment scroll carries the independence date, marking the nation's liberation. Above it, the resplendent quetzal stands for freedom, since the bird is known to perish in captivity.
