Coat of Arms of Sambir-Drohobych UGCC Shot Glass: Design Description

This shot glass showcases a beautifully rendered version of the Coat of Arms of the Sambir-Drohobych Eparchy of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. The design is split into two distinct sections separated by a zigzag line, evoking a sense of mountains or hills, symbolic of the Carpathian region.

Heavenly Realm

The upper portion of the design represents the "heavenly plane." It features a silver (white) background upon which an icon of the Virgin Mary is depicted. She wears a blue tunic and a purple maphorion (veil/cloak), with a golden halo radiating around her head. To either side of the halo are the Greek letters "ΜΡ" and "ΘΥ," abbreviations for "Mother of God." The Virgin Mary holds a silver omophorion (liturgical cloth) trimmed with gold, bearing a gold cross.

Earthly Realm

The lower part presents the "earthly plane," set against a green background that represents the forests and hills of the Carpathian foothills. Here, a golden, stylized wooden church with three domes stands prominently, representing a traditional church architecture common to the region and the Holy Trinity.

Episcopal Authority

Above the shield, the design is topped with a gold bishop's mitre (ceremonial hat) lined with red. Behind the shield, a golden processional cross and a bishop's crosier (staff) are placed in a crossed formation (saltire), signifying the ecclesiastical authority of the bishop.
