Visual Elements & Composition

The emblem is built in three stacked bands, each set inside an oval ring and crowned by a ribbon banner lettered with ESTADOS UNIDOS DE COLOMBIA and the motto LIBERTAD Y ORDEN. Red and yellow carry the most colour, with dark blue, brown and olive green filling the remaining field. Meaning & Symbolism

The pomegranate in the upper section stands for the original Viceroyalty of New Granada, the colonial root of the nation. Below, two sailing ships speak to maritime commerce on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, while the palm and olive branches framing the shield signal peace and victory. Together they express the independence and economic ambition that defined the federation. The modern coat of arms, standardised in 1924, replaced this design with a condor and a different arrangement, which makes this earlier version a record of a distinct stage in Colombian political identity.
