Meaning & Symbolism

The Tryzub is the heart of the emblem. The Central Rada adopted it on 22 February 1918 as the state emblem of the Ukrainian People's Republic, with the design created by artist Vasyl Krychevsky during the 1917 to 1921 period of statehood. Its trident is historically linked to Prince Volodymyr the Great, who ruled Kyivan Rus in the late 10th and early 11th centuries and stamped the symbol on his coins and seals. The emblem has been read as sovereignty, unity, and continuity, and after Ukraine regained independence in 1991 the same trident became the Small Coat of Arms of Ukraine. Some historians see a falcon diving in its shape, which adds another layer to the story.
