This is a printed political map of Europe as it stood in the mid-twentieth century, drawn in the cartographic style of the 1970s.

Visual Elements & Composition

Ocean blue fills much of the sheet, framing a cream landmass picked out in pale pink and pale yellow, with a gold border closing the rectangular frame. The national outlines are irregular and carefully drawn, so the eye moves naturally from the Scandinavian peninsula down through the Iberian and Italian peninsulas and across the Mediterranean. Printed labels do the rest: EUROPE, NORTH SEA, NORWEGIAN SEA, UNITED KINGDOM, FRANCE, SPAIN, ITALY, MEDITERRANEAN SEA, TURKEY and EGYPT sit across the page, with Iceland floating in the northwest.

Meaning & Symbolism

Colour does the political work here. Each state is a separate tone of its own, and the borders are the story. West Germany and East Germany appear as two countries, the clearest sign of a continent split along ideological lines. The Soviet Union reaches across the east, taking in the Baltic states, while Eastern Europe sits within the Soviet Bloc alongside independent communist states such as Albania and Yugoslavia. In the west, the map records Franco's Spain and Salazar's Portugal. It is a document of the Cold War era, drawn before the fall of the Berlin Wall and before the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia dissolved into the states that replaced them.
