This design is a printed political map of Europe from the 1980s, drawn to show the continent's countries, borders and seas as they stood during the Cold War.

Visual Elements & Composition

Cream dominates the map, covering roughly two-fifths of the surface, with ocean blue carrying the seas and a quarter of the field. Pale green, tan and rose separate the national territories, so each state reads as its own distinct shape. The Scandinavian peninsula, Iceland, the British Isles, the Iberian and Italian peninsulas all sit clearly in place. Lettering is set in the classic cartographic manner: EUROPE runs across the land, while UNITED KINGDOM, SOVIET UNION, the Atlantic Ocean, the Norwegian Sea, the Baltic Sea, the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea name the features around them. The National Geographic Society and National Geographic Magazine credits give the printed sheet its source.

Meaning & Symbolism

The map records a divided continent. West Germany and East Germany appear as separate states, marking the line between the Western democracies and the Eastern Soviet Bloc, which included Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and East Germany. The Soviet Union extends across the eastern half of the sheet, taking in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, while Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia stand as unified states that later broke apart. Each border drawn here carries the ideological weight of its moment, and the map preserves a chapter that ended with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the dissolution of the USSR.
